If you’ve never seen Def Poetry Jam, I would suggest watching this brilliant one, which is sure to give you the goosebumps to get a feel for the poetic style offered; it’s from Daniel Beaty:
I’ve seen quite a few of these now and this is probably my favorite. By the time he reaches the end, I just want to explode along with that audience. It’s powerful and it really comes down to his performance. Sure, the words themselves are great, but the way in which he articulates them and builds up to the climax…”Knock, knock, whose there? We are,” is undeniably powerful. You can see the passion and intensity in his eyes. I love it.
I love poetry, but I don’t think I could ever pull of this style. I don’t have that performance aspect in me, but damn if I don’t respect others that do.
