Pussy Riot’s “I Can’t Breathe”

Eric Garner

Usually on here, I do a music roundup (which I need to do a new one), but for this particular blog post, I wanted to focus on one song in particular I came across yesterday because it was “trending” on my Facebook; the Russian band Pussy Riot’s “I Can’t Breathe” song in tribute of sorts to Eric Garner and his case in Staten Island, New York. Check out the music video and song below:

The song starts off with, what I think at least, are the configured sounds of bullets being fired. In the video, the camera pans up on dirt — a grave really — where a carton of cigarettes lies. Eric Garner was accosted for selling loose cigarettes, which is illegal or “loosies.”

Well, I don’t want to impose myself on the song and video. Suffice it to say, I found it not only very powerful, but a bad-ass “tribute” of sorts to Eric Garner and the issue surrounding his death. I’ve had the song on repeat since I heard it yesterday.
