It’s bad-ass that over 300,000-some people marched for climate change in New York today. I tend to heavily err on the side of science and I think science is correct about what’s going on. It has nothing to do with saving Earth, just our way of life. Earth’ll be fine regardless.
But, their solutions are odd. Just as the government is ill-equipped to centrally plan the economy or foresee the unintended consequences of warring with other nations, the government is likewise ill-equipped to pick “winners” and “losers” in the market to decide how best to solve climate change. That doesn’t stop proponents than thinking big government can wave a magical wand over the globe that’ll solve climate change.
Even, though, as others have pointed out, the U.S. military is one of the biggest polluters in the world and it would take our empire to make many of the changes proposed.
Just as I heavily err on the side of science, I also heavily err on the side technology and (genuinely) free markets to solve problems. A problem of global, complex proportions should have more freedom on the table, not less. Logically, it doesn’t make any sense to put solutions into a narrow box.
