It’s been a while since I’ve done a music-related post. Thought I’d share three new songs I’ve come across, which I’ve enjoyed. Then a bonus track that’s probably more familiar with others. No particular order here of “enjoyment.”
1. “Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst” – Kendrick Lamar
It’s a long one, so settle in for this, but it’s worth it. I’m not well-versed in hip hop. I dig the history of it, know some of the big hitters throughout and obsess in typical white boy fashion over Eminem, but I can’t honestly say I listen to a wide variety of hip hop. With that said, I know what I like in hip hop: Smooth, clear delivery (re: I can understand what they’e saying) and gritty reflections of street life and personal struggles. That’s what we get here with Lamar’s lengthy rap. Aside from having a smooth, almost jazz-vibe, if understated beat, the lyrics are somewhat meta. He wants to be remembered for being a strong lyricist. I particularly like, “I suffer a lot, and every day the glass mirror get tougher to watch; I tie my stomach in knots and I’m not sure why I’m infatuated with death.”
But I don’t want to blab too much about these songs. Just give it a whirl.
2. “Now Go” – Erato
This Swedish girl-band might be a bit too “pop” for some, but the instrumentals are catchy and the vocals are beautiful. It’s short and sweet.
3. “My Tears Are Becoming a Sea” – M83.
Even if there were no lyrics to this song, it would be worth it for that masterful fucking crescendo at the end from this French band. I can’t stop listening to it. It’s one of the shortest songs I’ve ever heard, but the instrumentals are mesmerizing, dazzling.
4. “A Martyr For My Love For You” – The White Stripes
Probably my favorite Stripes song. Lovely title.
