I Don’t Need Much to Be Happy

Something I was thinking about while doing some of these side gig delivery services, such as Amazon Flex and Instacart is that … I don’t need a lot! A lot of my deliveries have taken taken me to almost quasi-mini mansion suburbs, and I absolutely do not shame people who live in those houses and take pride in having worked to live in such houses with the expansive yards and everything else that living style entails, but I also don’t get it! I mean, I do get that if you have a family with children and such and you have the means to, having a big house in which to raise your kids is convenient.

But speaking as a single man with no kids, I absolutely do not pine for a big house in any way, shape or form. I know others who do and again, no stones being thrown here, but I don’t. I have no interest in it. Or more vehicles. Or a bigger television. Or a bigger bed. Or anything in those comparable categories. I don’t need a lot of space or “things.” I do enjoy a few kitchen gadgets, such as my the air fryer I was gifted or a smoothie maker and of course, a coffee maker, but what else do I need? A bigger television? Nah. A second or third television? Nah.

I’m not a sneaker person or a clothes person. I like goofy shirts and will sometimes pick up another one at Kohl’s, but I don’t often change-over my wardrobe.

If anything, I’ve taken pride in not accumulating more things into my living space. I need books. I need that one television to enjoy pro wrestling, movies and other TV shows. I need the aforementioned kitchen items. I need one workable vehicle. I need one good bed for myself. What else do I need?!

Again, I don’t begrudge anyone who wants more, whatever more means to them. If they have the means, go for it! No shame being cast here. But for myself, even if I came into a bigger salary or something ridiculous like the lottery, I honestly don’t think my material life would change much at all. That’s not fake modesty or humility or whatever. I’m just being honest and it’s something I’ve thought about delivering to some of these bigger homes.

I’d use a better salary or something unlikely like the lottery to pay off outstanding debts, such as my student loans, my vehicle and my house, but would I substantially increase anything else? I’m not sure. Maybe my travel budget? To go see the rest of the United States and the world? That’s the only thing I can really think of and is that considered material? Or superfluous? I don’t know. I’m literally looking around my house trying to think of what I would do differently with more money and I can’t think of a single addition. Seriously.

What about you? Do you pine for a bigger home? More vehicles? More things? Again, I totally get all of that for necessity reasons with a family and such, but for my individual self? I’m good. More money to have a better financial safety net would be nice, but not to get more things.
