Haiku Challenge for March 7: ‘Yet’

Picture courtesy of the late Rep. John Lewis, who captioned this on March 7, 2020 with, “55 years ago today, we were beaten, tear gassed, and trampled by horses. I thought I saw death. I thought I was going to die. I don’t know how I made it back, but I know we cannot rest. We cannot become weary. We must keep pushing and pulling and find a way to get in the way.”

Today’s haiku challenge:

Today, I was inspired by the occasion of it only being 56 years ago that Bloody Sunday happened. On March 7, 1965, and for the next three weeks, protesters marched from Selma to Montgomery for the right to vote and were savagely beaten by Alabama State Troopers for it.

My style is the five/seven/five syllable structure. Here are my five haiku poems:

and yet they marched on
blood mixing with injustice
to create better.

and yet they marched on
the bridge cried its silent tears
carrying such wrong.

and yet they marched on
even with death in their eyes;
in hell, keep going.

and yet they marched on
trampled by the blind horses
the wounds ran deeper.

and yet they marched on
hard hats beat them to the ground
so they could gain ground.
